Desalinization systems

When areas don't have an adequate supply of fresh water, whether due to climate, geography, or drought conditions, they may turn to desalinization systems. Desalinization is the process of converting seawater into water that's suitable for crops and drinking. The systems remove salt by evaporation or reverse osmosis. Many island nations and Middle Eastern countries use these systems. However, they're extremely expensive. For cities who can't afford such systems, the only options are to drill deep into the water table, or to import water from other areas through aqueducts. In the long run, neither of these options is very practical. Since only 3% of the earth's water is fresh water, it makes more sense to reclaim seawater, if it could be done cost-effectively. To this end, several new technologies are being developed. One proposes to remove salt by means of a patented carbon gel. Another potential method is the hurricane tower, designed to simulate the action of hurricanes, which are known to produce fresh water. It may be several years, however, before any of these methods are proven effective. To find out more about desalinization systems, visit the Internet, or your local library.
