There are several things you can do around the house to conserve water and lower your water utility bills. * Install low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators (air-rate-ers) in your kitchen and bathrooms. They can be purchased at local hardware and home improvement stores. These devices help save water and the energy it takes to heat it. * Don't leave water running unnecessarily when brushing your teeth or washing dishes. * Use your dishwasher efficiently. It's usually not necessary to rinse dirty dishes, but you may want to scrape them. Only run your dishwasher when it's full. * Use warm or cold water when it will do the same job as hot water, such as when washing clothes. Make sure you wash only full loads of laundry. It takes more water to do two small loads than one large load. * When shaving, close the sink drain. An average of nearly twenty gallons of water runs down the drain before the last whisker. * Location of your water heater is important in conservation. It should be as close to the point where it is being used as possible. Long pipe runs result in cold water running out of the faucet while waiting for the hot water - wasting water and energy. For more information, contact your local service provider or your utility company.
