Former President Bill Clinton came back to Little Rock this week to show support for Senator Blanche Lincoln who's in the political fight of her life. She's trying to keep her U.S. Senate seat despite poll numbers showing her opponent, Republican John Boozman, leading among voters.
Clinton headlined a Wednesday night event meant to celebrate Lincoln's first year as chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee but it seemed more like a campaign rally. Clinton said he knows Arkansans are upset about the economy but he said they shouldn't take it out on Senator Lincoln by voting against her or not voting at all.
"We have a tough race ahead but its one we can win," says Clinton.
Clinton praised Lincoln for her work in the Senate bringing financial assistance to Arkansas farmers and helping to make health care more accessible for Arkansas families among other accomplishments. Lincoln said she will continue standing up for Arkansans if voters keep her in office in November.
Lincoln supporters said they were thankful for Clinton's help because they know this is shaping up to be a tough race.
"He is one of our great home humanitarians and him being here supporting her makes us give her a bigger push here in Arkansas," says Normal Gilchrest.
Clinton also campaigned for Joyce Elliott Wednesday morning as she seeks the 2nd District Congressional seat.
But those on the other side of the fence say Arkansans want a change. Alice Stewart with the Arkansas Republican party said, "the Republican candidates are in touch with Arkansans and will look at them in the eye and tell them what they're going to do in Washington and do the same thing in Washington, which is not what we're seeing in the Democratic candidates."
While in town, Clinton also helped celebrate the 25th anniversary of the non-profit group Winrock International and he planned to appear again at a campaign fundraiser for Lincoln Thursday morning.
