The world's largest maker of mining and construction equipment opens a new operation in North Little Rock. Wednesday was the grand opening of Caterpillars Motor Grader Facility.
"To Caterpillar, we've been so proud of you for so long from afar. We've very happy to be married to you," says Governor Mike Beebe.
In 2009, Caterpillar announced it was moving its motor grade operations. For the last 18 months the company has been re-designing the facility. The facility used to be deluxe media services, but needed a facelift when CAT decided to move in.
"A lot of it was re-doing floors, putting in cranes, the whole grader system, lots and lots of things," says Harrison.
While renovations were being made the workers were being hired and training for five months!
"It was very extensive. There were a lot of boring periods but a lot of good information," says Spoor.
There's about 200 workers right now. In the coming months that number will multiply by three. Employees are already making fast progress.
"We've already built 18 machines already," says Harrison.
Motor grades help build roads and two of these brands are not made anywhere else in the world. Instead of made in the USA, how about made in North Little Rock.
"You're not only helping yourself and your families and future employees, you're getting us ammunition to go get somebody else and your neighbors job to also," says Governor Beebe.
A good performance by Caterpillar can help other new companies and jobs come to the Natural State.
Caterpillar officials say they plan to hire another 300 to 400 new workers. To
