It's supposed to be one of the happiest days of their lives. But for many high school graduates commencement comes with deep concern about the future of our economy. And it's concern backed by hard evidence like business closures and layoffs. But the seniors of 2009 are savvy to the circumstances and they're preparing themselves to succeed the best way they can.

For Oak Grove High School graduates it's a day to charge forward, but to what exactly no one knows. Graduate Landon Willmuth said, "It's really tough with all the jobs that there's not a lot of opportunity and people getting laid off and stuff like that, but I feel pretty confident with what I want to do." For Willmuth that's sports journalism but he's not limiting his options, he's also considering the medical field. "I have a few friends that are looking forward to being physical therapists and pharmacists and stuff like that because they think that's of higher need right now," he told us.

Oak Grove counselor Virginia Abrams said, "You might go to college and major in something that is your true passion. But let's think about it realistically. Where is the money? Where can you earn gainful employment?" Abrams says 2009 graduates are taking a very realistic approach to planning their futures, many considering those plentiful medical careers or the military. Those with the school encouraged students to apply for as many schools and scholarships as they could this year so they have plenty of back-up options.

Those graduating Saturday say they fully understand the economic situation but they're hoping that in 4 years, once they graduate college, things will be better and it's easier to find work. So Landon says for now he's leaning toward following his dream of sports journalism and hoping for the best. And at least for the moment these graduates can celebrate.

Even though many high school seniors have graduated there's actually still time to apply for the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship. The deadline is June 1st. You could get nearly $12,000 for school over 4 years with that scholarship.
