LITTLE ROCK, AR -- To make sure kids at Carver Magnet Elementary School are safe, magnetic doors are now installed.

The upgrades were scheduled prior to the Sandy Hook shooting, but leaders say the tragedy put a rush on the installation process.

The changes mean outsiders can't just open the door.

"We buzz them in," said secretary Rachel Williams.

Little Rock School leaders spending about $2,000 on the upgrades, which gives more safety to students and staff. Williams is the main user.

"Just knowing someone just can't walk in from off the street, makes you feel better," said Williams.

So now teachers and staffers use ID cards to get inside. They are the only ones who have free access to the building.

"We want the schools to be open to the community, but we want to keep them safe at the same time," said parent Whitney Bordelon.

The school also got a new security guard and more upgrades are coming.

"We are going to get a gate that will go from the building to the neighborhood fence," said Williams.

But leaders acknowledge fighting crime is a neverending task.
