More and more drivers are looking for ways to save money on their auto insurance. Problem is more and more are simply cutting it out all together. Studies say one in six drivers nation-wide will be on the road uninsured by next year.  It's a dangerous trend with costly consequences; Drivers choosing to drop their auto coverage to save money, a risk some drivers say isn't worth it.

“Every family is cutting back. And that, if we were ever to be in such a bind, then yes, would be one area we would consider cutting,” Nicki Dudek said.

Six months ago Nicki Dudek and her husband looked into making changes to their current policy. They found that if they switched carriers they would pay about $400 bucks more a year for the same coverage.

What they were paying for two SUV’s was actually a good deal. “I have clients coming in all the time... Have a policy for 10-15 years,” Jason Cuaderno said.

Farmer’s Insurance agent Jason Cuaderno says drivers should review their policy every time it's renewed. He gets calls from customers all the time looking to get extensions on their payments. A gamble that could cost you and anyone you hit big bucks.

"Especially with today's economy, everyone's trying to do the best they can financially, you know, to save money or anywhere they can to put money in the bank," Cuaderno said.

If you're involved in a crash without auto insurance you will lose your license and face heavy fines and that's only if no one gets hurt. Police and auto insurers say it's not worth it Dudek couldn't agree more. ”Maybe not completely removing the insurance 'cause we know we need it. But maybe not having comprehensive on one of the vehicles,” Dudek said.

Another way to save money is to call your insurance agent and ask for a discount on your current auto insurance. Many agents will work with you especially if you've had a good driving record over the past few years.
