The town of Plumerville is reacting to the death of their hometown hero. This as more details are developing surrounding the suspects comes out. Shooting suspect, Shane Lonix is being held in the Faulkner County jail on capital murder charges. Jerry Lankford was being held in Conway County charged with being an accomplice to murder. Those charges have been dropped and Lankford has been released from jail.
Kenneth James of Plumerville lives across the road from where officer Joey Cannon clocked in for work. "We see them go in and out every day."
At The Country Store in Plumerville, Cannon was a familiar face. "I saw him this morning and he said he had a slow day last night," said clerk Nancy Blake.
Just hours later, he was shot and killed during a traffic stop. Lankford was arrested on the scene after authorities say he jumped out of the pick-up truck Lonix was driving. Friday evening we spoke with witnesses who say at least a dozen officers surrounded the Rolling Pines neighborhood looking for Lonix, something they say isn't common in their subdivision.
When we showed up to the home of Shane Lonix we were invited inside but relatives didn't want to talk. At The Country Store things won't be the same without Officer Cannon.
"It's going to be hard especially in the mornings. We're so used to seeing him there's someone here when we open and when we close to make sure everybody's all right,” Blake said.
"Nobody expects anything like this ever. The whole community loved him," friend Jeff James said.
