Cubs sign Valbuena to 1-year deal

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs signed infielder Luis Valbuena to a one-year, $930,000 contract on Thursday, avoiding arbitration.

Claimed off waivers from Toronto by the Cubs last season, Valbuena batted .219 with four home runs and 28 RBI in 90 games.

A five-year veteran, the 27-year-old Venezuelan is a career .224 batter with 17 home runs and 85 RBI in 319 games with the Mariners, Indians and Cubs.
