Marshall, Rector won't field HS football teams

MARSHALL, Ark. (AP) — Marshall and Rector won't be fielding teams in varsity football this year.

Both schools cited low participation as reason for the cancellation.

On Tuesday, the Searcy County School District voted to not field a Marshall varsity team this season. Mountain Home radio station KTLO reports (http://is.gd/9nydtE ) it's the first time in 45 years Marshall won't field a varsity team.

Marshall coach Kenny Phillips says the Bobcats will still have a junior varsity and junior high football team, and he's hopeful the school will have enough players to compete next year.
